Legal Counsel

Legal (LEG) is the competence unit for all legal matters related to the Equinor group’s business areas and corporate activities and consist of legal experts, specialists, consultants, and qualified support personnel. The department has overall responsibility for advising on all legal matters and on ethics and anti-corruption compliance, undertaking Integrity Due Diligence research and acting as the Corporate Bodies’ secretariat within the Equinor group.

LEGAL Business Ethics and Compliance (LEG BEC), headed by the Chief Compliance Officer, is responsible for anti-corruption, money laundering, fraud, trade sanctions, export controls and competition compliance. LEG BEC is also responsible for the Equinor group’s Code of Conduct and its whistleblower channel.

LEG BEC is responsible for providing legal advice on compliance matters and advising on Equinor’s Code of Conduct. The team supports Equinor’s management and business in addressing and managing the compliance risks of Equinor`s operations. LEG BEC is also responsible for development, implementation and management of Equinor`s Compliance Programs.

We are recruiting for experienced Legal Counsel to join LEG BEC specifically to advise on trade sanctions globally.

Job Description

  • Supporting the day to day operations and business of Equinor by providing legal and compliance advice to in-house clients
  • Supporting our global business in assessing and addressing trade sanctions risks in our assets
  • Assisting in developing and maintaining trade sanctions compliance policies and procedures
  • Providing training to Equinor personnel on trade sanctions in Norway and abroad
  • Building relations and managing stakeholders throughout Equinor focusing on trade sanctions controls
  • Monitoring legal, regulatory and enforcement trends and supporting the calibration of Equinor’s trade sanctions controls accordingly
  • Assessing and addressing trade sanctions risks in corporate transactions (M&A)
  • Liaising and consulting with personnel on all levels across the organization to identify business area- and country-specific trade sanctions risks and provide robust and practical guidance and advice to the business line in how to sufficiently protect Equinor


  • Strong academic qualifications
  • Relevant experience, preferably from top-tier law firms, consulting firms or equivalent in-house legal teams
  • Interest in and preferably an established knowledge of global trade sanctions
  • Excellent English language skills both written and oral
